Many individuals suffer from having dark knees and elbows, and it can be both annoying and uncomfortable. You might otherwise have very clear and light skin, but the dark and dry knees and elbows can make you feel self conscious and embarrassed.
You may avoid wearing short sleeves and tank tops or shorts and skirts. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to get rid of those dark knees and elbows in no time.
Why Do Some People Get Dark Knees and Elbows?
A lot of people think that only ethnic people get dark skin on their knees and elbows. This is somewhat reasonable. A lot of Mexican, Black, Middle Eastern and Indian women have trouble with dark spots on their skin.
The truth is, however, everyone is built differently. You might not get dark knees and elbows just because you are of a certain ethnicity, either. It could be that you just tend to have dry skin.
The reason that a lot of people who have ethnically darker skin tend to get rough and dark looking knees and elbows is that their skin is already dark in the first place, and this can make their skin look almost black and grey or at least dark brown on the elbows and knees.
Finally, some people who tend to get a lot of sun might have dark knees and elbows. The sun’s UV rays and brightness dry out the skin, and this can cause dirty looking, cracking dry skin on these areas of the body.
Develop a Skin Care Routine for Dark Knees and Elbows
The best way to get rid of dark knees and elbows is to develop a skin care routine that you use all the time. This skin care routine will come in three basic steps. You will start with a good scrubbing exfoliator cleanse, move on to a mask to strip away the tougher layers of dead skin and create a smooth surface, and end with a moisturizing lotion to help restore moisture and balance to the areas.
1. Scrubbing Exfoliator
The scrubbing exfoliator will help to slough up the dead skin cells that are on the surface of the skin. These are the skin cells that are causing your skin to look dark in the first place.
You can buy a scrubbing exfoliator online or in some drugstores. Make sure to get one that also contains a moisturizing element. For example, a lot of stores sell exfoliators made of either sugar or salt mixed with an oil or cream.
Sometimes, the exfoliator beads are synthetic as well. They often have a special scent too. As you can see, the ingredients of these exfoliators are not that special, so you can actually make your own concoction. Simply mix together a little bit of salt or sugar with some coconut oil or jojoba oil. If you want a nice scent, try adding some lemon or lime peel zest.
To exfoliate your knees and elbows, you should also invest in either a wash cloth, a loofah or an exfoliating glove. Use one of these along with the exfoliating scrub when you’re in the shower or bath.
2. Clarifying Mask
After exfoliating the skin, you will need to apply a mask to remove the next layers of dead skin and smooth the surface. You can make this mask at home by simply mixing together a few tablespoons of baking soda with some milk.
This will make a paste-like liquid that you can apply to the skin. Let it stay on the skin until it dries and gets a bit crackly. This will take about 10 minutes. Rinse the mask off with warm water.
3. Moisturizing Lotion
The last step is the easiest one. All you need to do after you rinse off the mask is moisturize the area with the moisturizing lotion that you like best. Make sure to let the lotion dry before putting a shirt or pants on.
Remember that anyone can get dry and dark-looking knees and elbows. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, but at the same time, it’s not something that you should just have to ignore. Use the steps found in this article, and you will start to notice great lightening results in your knees and elbows very fast!
