In many cases, dry skin can give way to itchy and uncomfortable peeling skin. Sunburn can also cause ugly and painful peeling skin. Not only is peeling skin dangerous because it exposes the newer, more sensitive areas of skin underneath to the sun and the elements, but it can be very uncomfortable and let’s face it, not very attractive. If you have peeling skin, here’s how to get rid of it.
Aways protect your skin from the sun
The sun is one of the biggest causes of dried out and peeling skin. It also causes wrinkles, sun spots and age spots and can be the cause of dangerous melanoma and skin cancer. When you go outside, whether it is overcast, sunny or partly cloudy, always wear sunscreen.
Purchase a foundation or lotion that has sunscreen built into it so you don’t have to remember to put it on. Also, remember to wear long sleeves, pants and a hat if it is very bright out.
Moisturize your skin every day
If you simply have dried out and scaly or slightly peeling skin, make sure you are moisturizing with a non-comedogenic moisturizer in the morning and at night. This is especially important in the winter months when it is colder and the air is drier.
If a regular moisturizer isn’t doing the trick, try adding a few drops of jojoba oil into your moisturizer once a day for an extra kick.
Never pick or peel at your peeling skin
Under no circumstances should you continue to pick or peel at your skin. If there is a large piece that is hanging and already off, simply clip it very carefully with a small pair of scissors.
If you’re peeling skin is the result of a severe sunburn, make sure to be gentle with your skin afterwards. Use aloe vera lotion, oil or gel for at least one week after the sunburn. You can also take a cool bath with oatmeal to help calm the skin and speed up the recovery process.
Remember that your skin is the biggest organ of your body. If you have generally bad health, your skin will not fare well. If you’re a smoker, stop smoking now.
Make sure you’re getting enough cardiovascular exercise every day and enough sleep every night. Drink at least half of your body weight in ounces of water every day. Doing all of this will help your body and your peeling skin.
